Introduction to the Department
We
are living in the age of information explosion where technology has
revolutionalised information handling and we can use, preserve and
convey any amount of data or information anywhere in the world,
which in turn is primarily reshaping major aspects of our globalized
society. Information and its communication, today, is becoming the
centre of economic activity and as much a factor in production as
capital, labour or land is. Hence, it is inevitable to train our
youth for the challenges of Information age in order to survive and
develop.
The Mass Communications department at
NUST covers a wide variety of disciplines, starting from the basic perspectives
of the field of Mass Media and Communication, moving on to explore each area of
the discipline through broad exposure to the industry and practical assignments
along with the added emphasis on media research methods. The emphasis will be on
analytical and historical perspectives; imparting the students with the ability
to assess the role and effect of mass media on society and developing specific
media production skills through extensive practical drill.
The programme starts by developing a fundamental understanding of the subject in
students by teaching them about the history, values and structure of mass
communication in Pakistan
and abroad. Students are then trained to analyze the effects of electronic and
print media, to enable them to analyze media effects on public policy, as well
as the impact of public policy on the media.
In addition to the core courses, students must take some approved media
research method courses in Social Sciences and a number of electives offered
from other disciplines like, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science,
Linguistics and Journalism.
Research-specific Units:
Research Methods in Persuasive Communication, Organizational
Networks and Media Effects.
